This is a gorgeous riad beautifiully restored, it is comfortable, tasteful, great service, has fantastic views of the medina from the terrace….it is well located in the heart of the medina..near the local shops; on the way to the main attractions of tanneries, souqs, medersas and mosques…staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable in advising sights to see and the local culture… The building is stunning with intricate plaster carvings, original and restored mosaics done in traditional way, it is quiet at night, beautifully decorated with furnishings that are typically moroccan and compliment the building…
Great meals and service, it felt safe and secure in its location and in the service offered, I highly recommend this place and hope to return there when next in fes
It is very difficult to explain ( for me as a German in English language) how much we liked the Dar el Menia, it´s excellent condition (including what means lasting restauration), it´s fantastic world of “1001 nights- standard”, it´s real great daily service or it´s silence in the middle of a lively old medina. It´s also an island for people, who can´t speak Arabic or French to relax the head from all that strong thinking all the day outside. You´ll find everytime somebody to talk in a really friendly way. It´s not usual hospitality you´ll find ebut much more. You feel saved in a familary ambiance. There is so much to tell about- but better to go and see!
An oasis of calm, but just a few steps away from the best Fez has to offer: its amazing Medina. The house has been restored in an amazing way. We stayed in a double room with shared bathroom, the room was a thing of beauty, with heating, cozy blankets and tastefully decorated. The bathroom was also beautiful and very clean! Abdoul is definitely an added value!! Very sweet and knowledgeable, a pleasure to talk to!
Graham vi organizzerà l’arrivo con una macchina all’aeroporto e l’autista vi accompagnerà sino all’albergo.
Insomma, 5 stelle piene!
We stumbled across the Dar El Menia by accident, and we are so thankful that we did. It is an elegant, Andalusian-style dar in the heart of the bustling Fez medina that offers attentive service at superbly reasonable prices. Breakfast on the roof is a delight; the rooms are spacious, comfortable, and beautifully decorated; the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and exceptionally welcoming. We were provided with information on what was happening in Fez, where to go, what to see, and good places to eat. Trips out of the city were arranged for us, as was transport to the railway station. It was the service that we wanted. Our room didn’t have an en-suite bathroom, but it was just across the stairwell which was no serious inconvenience. The early-morning adhan was a disturbance, but given that it is intended to be heard across the city, there can be no real complaints. Graham and his team provided us with the most wonderful setting for the first leg of our trip to Morocco and helped to create marvellous memories. I would not hesitate to recommend Da El Menia to those travelling to Fez.
Dar El Menia is perfectly located on a tiny alley way just off the Medina’s main street, Talaa Kibira – minutes walk from all sights of interest. Behind a beautifully carved door is a luxurious oasis, a traditional house restored to its original grandeur with all mod cons discretely installed without compromising the house’s traditional appeal.
We ate a home cooked evening meal there on our first night, cooked and served by our maid, the food was excellent and we ate at Dar El Menia again on our last night in Fez..
I would unreservedly recommend Dar El Menia for any one wanting to experience Fez Medina. PERFECT!
Dar El Menia is exactly what you want when staying in Fez Medina! It is an extremly old courtyard house with all its old features and charms intact. Restored tp a high standard and with all the modern facilities you would expect. Staff are warm and friendly and the evening meal we ate on the terrace was the best we had in Fez. Are room was medium/large with a beautiful ensuite shower room. Stay here!
Well, I chose Dar El Menia based on all of the greats reviews here and I they are all right. Dar El Menia is a wonderful place to stay. I was with my husband, 3 daughters (8, 13 and 15) and my parents and I wanted somewhere that we could have to ourselves. It was very pretty, especially the lovely wrought iron work on the windows and balcony.
Graham, the owner, had been very helpful before we left, organising our return trip by mini bus to Casablanca and a day trip to Volubis and when we were there Abdul organised a belly dancing lesson and henna for the girls. The cooing class Graham suggested to me that I booked before we went (at Cafe Clock) was fantastic and a real highlight of the holiday for me (and little Lucy who spent the day with me).
The stairs are tricky and I wasn’t sure how Mum was going to manage as her knees had become very bad just before we left. But after some initial trepidation she managed well and just developed a way of slowly getting up and down them.
We had dinner prepared for us on the night we arrived and after our dday trip and that was really good. Great to have good Moroccan food in a lovely setting and then just wander downstairs to bed. It was also very good for us to have access to the kitchenn to cook for ourselves and I enjoyed buying some things in the markets and then cooking.
The location is great. I thought at first that we would have trouble finding our way back to it when we went out but actually it was fine. It is very central in the Medina for easy walks.
Everything is simply beautiful in this house which still has a fresh smell of linseed oil from a recent total renovation. Every little detail has been carefully chosen, and I just hated to place my fluorescent green plastic toothbrush in the aged ceramic cup in the bathroom, it looked so misplaced.
Graham (the owner) and his staff Abdul and Mostapha with wife Um Kal Thum are there in the morning around breakfasttime and in the evening for some hours. Ready to answer your questions and help you. The rest of the day you have the house pretty much to yourself, you can use the kitchen, chill on the roof terrace and feel at home. Abdul is such a nice young man, full of good advice, from where to clean your mobile from desert sand to what Morrocan music to buy and where. He will pick you up in the middle of the night and show you the way to the house if there is a need for it! Um Kal Thum is a very good cook and she also helped us with our laundry, Mostapha is all smiles, very proud of the medina where he is born, and will also give you good ideas on what to see and do.
Bring earplugs, or the morning prayer call from the neighbouring mosque will wake you up every morning at 5.30! (this will be the case wherever you choose to stay as there are many mosques in the Medina) If you are tall, avoid the Mezzanine room, as it has a low ceiling (but it is very cosy!). The other rooms are “grander”! The riad was a real treat to stay in . It is centrally located and the rooms are decorated in a traditional way but at the same time they offer comfort and a peaceful retreat from the busy medina. The staff couldn’t have done more for us . One member of staff even walked us to the taxi rank at 3 in the morning to make sure we didn’t get lost or feel worried! The breakfast was served in a relaxed manner and sitting on the rooftop at night listening to the occasional call to prayer was very memorable .
I would highly recomend this riad for a real Moroccan experience
A beautifully restored riad right in the centre of the medina, only a minute or so from one of the main streets in Fez. It’s extremely quiet at night and has a great roof terrace with views over the medina and to the surrounding hills.
The owner and staff are extremely welcoming and friendly, and the riad has a very homely atmosphere. Would definitely recommend to anyone travelling to Fez.
This Riad was one of the most beautiful and charming places we stayed on our tour of Morocco.
it is in the heart of the old medina and i would rfeturn in a heartbeat.
only two very minor areas for improvement are ; AC would be good although not essential because of the type of building and a little more light in the alleyway would also be good.
Our family of four book a suite at Dar El Menia in July of this year. Two double rooms conected by a balcony overlooking the inner courtyard. The house is stunning and the rooms are likewise. The decor is quite minimal compared to other riads we stayed in which seem to go way over the top and look a bit chinsie. The house was furnished with a good eye and looked really beautiful. We found it extremley relaxing after the mad rush of the hot Medina. The location is just about perfect near the main drag ,Talaa Kibira, but far enough away to be quiet on an evening, being tucked away down a small alley.
This is a superb guesthouse, more like a hotel really, I would very much like to return.
We stayed at Dar El Menia for 3 nights. It is a very beautiful guesthouse and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The house is a traditional Magreb house built around a central courtyard. The restoration is of a high standard and the ensuites are done with taste. The roof terrace has excellent views and cool in the evenings. The location is perfect just off the main street on a quite little alley way near to all the action. The evening meals are a must…. EXCELLENT!!
Our family stayed at Dar El Menia in July of 2009 and had a fabulous time there. The riad is charming and atmospheric, the rooms are comfortable and quiet, and the rooftop terrace was a great place to retire to at the end of the night for a cold beer. The riad’s owner (Graham) was a congenial and helpful host. The location is excelllent – right in the medina, you can walk to everything. Our children were fascinated both by the riad itself and the lane that it is located on. We would highly recommend Dar El Menia – and would definitely stay there again when in Fes.
We were picked up by Hicham (an employee) en brought to the riad where we were warmly welcomed by Graham (the owner).
The suites were already booked so we had to take the rooms with the shared bath room. At first we had our doubts, but the bath room turned out to be perfectly decorated and very clean.
The riad is a great place to start your excursions from through Fes. You can walk from the riad to nearly every location in the old medina by just following the main road (Talaa Kbira). And the people provide a very welcome and relaxed atmosphere.
The very much worth the price and If I go back to Fes I will definitly stay in el Menia.
We stayed in this beautifully restored Riad in the heart of the Fes Medina for three nights, and were very pleased with it. It’s a bit hidden, in a quiet alley of the main street in the Medina, and very peaceful. The Riad has a lot of character, with many old details and nicely decorated rooms. Also, there is a large roof terrace, with a good view of the hills surrounding the city. Staff is helpful, and because the Riad only has four rooms the overall atmosphere is very relaxed, almost like staying in a rented appartment. We would definitely recommend Dar el Menia to friends planning to stay in Fes.
Dar El Menia is a little jewel among the bussle of Fez Medina. A truly beatiful house with kind and welcoming staff; situated near the heart of the Medina. The location is excellent and the views from the terrace superb. The restoration has been done to a high standard and the rooms clean and tidy. We had an evening meal which would have fed four adults which was just great. I would whole heartedly recommend Dar El Menia to anyone visiting Fes. Just GO.
My wife and I stay at Dar El Menia for four nights. The house is extremely beautiful and the staff warm and friendly. The roof top terrace is well furnished with sofas. It was a joy to sit out in the cool evening with a beer and experience the evening atmophere. We ate an excellent evening meal prepared by the maid on the terrace. The breakfast is also on the terrace and kept us going most of the day I would highly recomend Dar El Menia and hope to return… SOON!
My stay in Dar El Menia made my holiday in Fes complete. On arrival i was greeted by Mustafa and his wife who run the house for the owner, they were very friendly and Icham their son provided me with lots of local info. The house is beautifully decorated in the traditional Moroccon style, on entering the front door it takes your breath away. I included breakfast and evening meal in my stay, which was well worth it, food was plentiful and delicious and served on the terrace, which made it a pleasant way to meet other guests. My room was very comfortable, loved the decor especially the wash basin in the bathroom! If i have the chance to visit Fes again , I will be heading for Del El Menia.
A beautifully restored guest house, in a great location to explore the magical medina of Fes. The rooms have been restored to a high standard offering a calm oasis to the mania that is the medina.
Graham, Hicham, Mostapha and Um Kalthum made every effort to ensure our stay was trouble free, from a delicious dinner on the first night, great breakfasts to ensuring you felt at home all the time and arranged everything you asked for.
Highly recommended and can’t wait to return…

My wife and I spent 2 nights in Dar El Meina during our trip to Morocco. It is a beautifully restored and maintained guest house in the medina in Fes. It is really like staying in a house, as there are only 3-4 rooms and you get a key to the front door. The Dar is not “hosted per se, but the family that the owner has hired to run it took very good care of us. They really make you feel welcome and overall the experience we had staying there was vastly superior to staying at a hotel.
We spent four nights at Dar El Menia, and it was a perfect way to immerse ourselves in the fascinating medina in Fes. The accommodations are beautifully restored, with a soaring interior courtyard and a nice rooftop terrace. The included breakfast was all we needed for energy for each full day of exploring. We had a room with a private bath, though rooms with shared baths are available. The caretaker and his family, as well as the owner, treated us so well with friendliness and advice on where to go and what to see, in Fes and in the surrounding area (a side trip to Volubilis is a must). It’s worthwhile to set aside some time just to sit in the dar to appreciate its beauty.
Recommend Dar el menia for a surprise weekend away. Was tucked down an alleyway in heart of medina near enough to restaurants to walk home easily at night. Room was gorgeous and the house was charming and felt very special without feeling too flash. Hicham and family were very hospitable and he was very helpful and on hand for forgetful and confused visitors! Would definitely recommend it as a lovely place to stay in the medina without breaking the bank…
Beautiful newly renovated house with 4 rooms decorated in the original marrocan style. The house is very well located to visit the Medina or get a taxi for a drive out of Fes.
You will definetely feel at home at Dar El Menia since the number of guests is limited. We were alone the first evening with our own house key. The house was full the following days with 7 persons incl. a baby representing 5 different nationalities.
Mustafa and his wife cook wonderfull evening meals if you wish (recommended on day of arrival) and prepare a nice breakfast, which you enjoy on the roof terrace. Icham is a great help for organizing guides or tours around Fes and provides you with good tips in general.
All in all you cannot do anything wrong booking here. Don’t look further, just book at Dar El Menia !
Our family stayed in Dar El Menia for a couple nights in February. It is charming and comfortable, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the position is perfect. Not only will we go back again (we live in Rabat) but we have recommended it to my mother in law who will stay there in May. It’s a terrific riad, and Fes is fun. Go
A rental that actually feels like a good hotel. One of the prettiest Dars and Riads we have seen in Fez, with full service, located on the Medina’s main axis and close to most things you may want to see or do in Fez. Very helpful staff and owner, so you never get lost and can make the most of your stay. Absolutely excellent cooking for dinner, strongly recommended to those who can afford this palatable option. We had a fantastic 4-day stay and our two children loved the quiet and refreshing atmosphere in the house, the nice breakfast, and the staff!
Authentic and well restored riad. Great location, great service, great food, and friendly. Nice views from the terrace. Would stay here again – any day.
Dar El-Menia is a beautifully renovated traditional Morocccan home situated steps away from the Bab Bou-Jeloud. Graham, Mustapha, his wife and son Hisham were extremely friendly, helpful and made us feel at home. Delicious home cooked (and plentiful) breakfasts, central location and lovely patio make this your best bet for your stay in Fes.
Fes was the last leg of our trip in Morocco and Dar El Menia quickly became our home away from home and great end to our adventure. Graham, the Dar owner, has done a wonderful job renovating – you are in awe from the moment you arrive. Both himself and his staff are friendly, breakfast was great and the location couldn’t have been better. I highly recommend
Dar El Menia is a wonderfully restored and very atmospheric old Moroccan house, and well run by Graham and his local staff. You will be well looked after here and very comfortable, as well as being right in the heart of the medina in Fes. Next time I go to Fes this is where I will stay.
This riad is a beautiful, calm oasis in the Medina of Fes. It is in an excellent location as it is close to the parking so not too far to walk with bags. The staff were friendly, the breakfast was excellent and the owner was friendly and helpful. My only, very minor, complaint was that the maid never came near our room in the three days that we were there so the bed remained unmade (unless we did it ourselves).
Tranquillity in the heart of the Madina. Fantastic spot, no hassle at all. Mustapha and his Mrs saw to all our wants . If you want to visit Fes, and truly know it. Its a must to stay in a Dar. And you would be struggling to find better for the price……….Also pop around the corner, just uphill a few steps and enjoy a special arabic coffee or mint tea at the little cafe tucked away in the corner. enjoy……………………
I have to admit that I do not usually trust Tripadvisor reviews and that I was skeptical at first about all the positive reviews I read about Dar El Menia, but this time I have to admit I was wrong. Dar El Menia is truly a beauty, not only because of the exceptinal place, the location, but also because of how you get treated by its owner and the people who run it. I apprecitated that even though I got to Fez at 7.00 am in the morning they came to meet me and let me get to my room at 8.00 am! I stayed for 2 days, and every day we had a great breakfast on the terrace with some of the guests and the owner himself, who lives nearby. The room was extremely clean and well kept. As I said, a perfect place for Fez!
This house has been restored by the owner of an other guesthouse in Fès, the Dar Seffarine. Owned by a british couple, it is a moderate size dar, wich makes it quite interesting, compared to other ones bigger and more expensive. Yes, it is very difficult to find resaonnable price for a room in a beautiful dar those days … This Dar El Menia propose a good choice.
Expect to take an architectural lesson from living there a few days. It is a jewel box ! On of the good aspects is that there are a lot of beautiful furniture there …
Breakfast is normaly served on the terrace. When we were there, it has been raining all the time, so we took it in the kitchen, wich wasn’t convenient as far as there is not much place to sit … was the only “bad aspect” …
Conclusion: choose this dar for situation ( perfect ), lovely decorating and genuine architecture, size ( moderate and typical ), and price.
Benj.
I was lucky enough to stay at Dar el Menia with friends for almost a week, and after the heavy traffic and bustle of the medina and long days full of walking and being out and about, it was a quiet, cozy and welcome retreat. Hicham and his family were warm and friendly and made us feel completely at home – every morning we woke up to a hot home-cooked breakfast and fresh coffee and one night they made us a huge traditional Moroccan dinner – every bit of which was delicious. The place is extremely clean and well-maintained, very secure and absolutely silent at night (except for the 5am call to prayer from the nearby mosques)! Only difficulty might be for travelers who have trouble with stairs – there are a lot of them, and they are high, though there is one bedroom and bathroom on the first level of the riad.
Our first night we didn’t know where to go for dinner so Hicham had a friend accompany us to a nearby restaurant in the medina (which was fantastic), and walked us home at night so we wouldn’t get lost in the maze! Everyone we met there went out of their way for us.
The riad is beautifully restored, as their website says – there was always plentiful hot water in the showers, space heaters in all the rooms (worked like a charm in the VERY COLD winter weather) a kitchen at guests’ disposal and a beautiful roof terrace that overlooks the whole city. I couldn’t imagine staying in a regular hotel in such a historic city as Fes – staying at Dar el Menia will make your trip to Morocco fully authentic and a true cultural experience. You will not be disappointed!
We stayed at Dar El Menia in October for 4 nights, we rented the whole Dar. It blew us away, from the arrival through winding alleys getting narrower by the minute to an unassuming door, then inside a beautiful oasis of a traditional house in the middle of the Fes medina. Traditional Fes tile work and everywhere glorious traditional colours and decoration.
Up the winding staircase to the rooftop where there is a view over the medina and across the hills. We ate our breakfasts everyday on the roof top and spent many hours in the evening taking in the sights and sounds.
The caretakers of the Dar were superb and could not have been more helpful, we had a wonderful traditional dinner one night at the dar, highly recommended.
This is a fantastic place to go with friends, family etc as it sleeps alot and there are enough places and spaces for everyone to get together or to have some alone time.
The stairs are narrow and winding so if you have any leg probs then maybe not so good. We found it no problem though.
Staying here made the beginning of a long trip a fabulous experience and set the tone for the rest of our travels.

No visit to Fez is complete without staying in Dar El Menia. The Riad is beautifully restored and sits right in the middle of Fez’s magical medina. The caretakers, Mostopha, his wife and their son, Hicham are wonderful hosts and extremely helpful.
We had a family of 8 and were able to take over the entire Riad. The bedrooms are spacious and the rooftop provides a panoramic view of the city. I highly recommend having dinner in the Riad at least one night. It is a very special experience (we had our Christmas dinner there). Mostapha’s wife is a wonderful cook.
5 stars for Dar El Menia!
My Nephew and I stayed at Dar El Menia for four nights in October, and wished we could stay longer. The guesthouse is perfectly located in the old medina so it’s quick to reach from the nearest gate, yet far enough within the medina to feel well submerged into into the medina’s culture. Dar El Menia was perfectly clean and comfortable, as well as exceedingly charming. Plus it’s NOT so close to a mosque that you are blasted out of the bed early in the morning with the call to prayer! This is very much a bonus in a place like the Fez medina. It is an intimate, lovingly restored old building with loads of character and a lovely terrace for breakfast and stargazing. Hicham and his father & mother manage the daily affairs and can set up taxis to nearby sites like Volubilis, Meknes and Moulay Idris for about 800 dh per day. Nice stuff
I had a fantastic stay at Dar el Menia. My travel to Morocco was something of a nightmare, with missed connections and delays that caused me to arrive 12 hours later then expected, at 3 am. It was something of a challenge getting to the guest house, but everyone there worked with me and was quite helpful. I crashed hard and they came by around 2:00 to see if I wanted “breakfast”! This was a nice bonus, as breakfast is included with the room, but usually served between 8 and 10. That was typical of how people went out of their way to take care of me while I was there.
The guest house is stunning. Beautifully restored with great detail and a lovely, comfortable place to hang out. Weather permitting, breakfast is served on the roof, which was a great way to start the day.
It’s right in the middle of the Medina, so once you get out of the tiny alley that leads to the house, you are immediately in the thick of things. I have absolutely no reservations recommending Dar el Menia to anyone considering a visit to Fes.
I would just like to say we had a fabulous trip to Fes. Dar El Menia is a truly beautiful Riad. Mustafa and his wife are absolutely delightful and the home cooked food excellent.
I would recommend this Riad to anyone we all had a great time.
We’ve just got back home from a great trip of Morocco. It really is a fantastic country of extremes. My boyfriend and I stayed at Dar El Menia for three nights and had wonderful time. The house is very special and Fez is like nowhere I’ve ever been before straight out of the middle ages.
The dar is right in the center of the Medina and is very comfortable and the staff helpful and kind. The architectural detail of the house is outstanding echoing fez’s imperial past.
We had a great stay and would love to go back!
My girlfriend and I spent 3 nights at Dar El Menia for a romantic break. We booked the whole house which worked out excellent value. The house is run by a local Moroccan family who are kind and the maid is an excellent cook.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this B&B to anyone we had a terrific time and hope to return.
My Dad and I stayed at the Dar El Menia for a week in Fes and absolutely loved it. The Dar is beautifully restored with the original mosaics, woodwork, and marble floors and the people are wonderful. The Dar El Menia is the ideal retreat from the bustling, winding medina. Graham and Gail were wonderful and Hicham and his family who run the Dar were really nice and great cooks. They arranged a guide for us who showed us around the medina and introduced us to all of the handicrafts of Fes. We ate breakfast with the other guests on the terrace, which gave us the opportunity to meet people and to compare travel notes. We had such a great time, we must come back!
Our Group consisted of a party of girlfriends. We spent two weeks in Morocco staying at Casablanca and Marrakech. We spent four days in Fez staying at Dar El Menia and we had the best time!. We rented the house as a whole which worked out very reasonable. Hicham met us at the train station and help us sort out a couple of red taxis and we went to the Medina. Our luggage was carried for us and we arrived at the house in the heart of the Medina. Walking down the tiny narrow street we walked through a carved wooden door and entered the courtyard of this wonderful house. Our three night stay was so homely and the staff friendly and kind.
We were all a bit concerned that we might get hassled being a group of women but on the whole this was not the case. Fez is shopping heaven especially for leather bags, shoes and scarfs -haggling is a must and a moroccan art form.
We ate at Dar El Menia on our last night and it was superb! Eating in the Medina was also great. Hicham took us to a traditional restaurant, deep in the Medina, on our first night which was great fun but very touristy. The cafes at Bab Boujloud were more our style and great for people watching. Hicham arranged a guide for us on our first day which was well worth the money and helped us get our bearings (a little) around the Medina.
We spent an evening at the bar in Hotel Batha, near Bab Boujloud, which made a welcome change. All in all Morocco was a great experience and for me Fez was the best place and Dar El Menia the best accommodation. Highly recommended!!
My girlfriend and I arrived at Fez airport our taxi was waiting for us and dropped us at an unassuming car park to be met by Hicham. He took us to Dar El Menia through tiny streets. Fez is an amazing place like no where we’d been before. The house is just perfect centered around a atrium with huge doors and marble floors. Neither myself nor my girlfriend had been to Morocco and we had no idea what to expect. But it was great and Dar El Menia was the high light; great accommodation, great food and friendly staff – jaw dropping first impressions.
Dar El Menia offers fist class accommodation at excellent prices. We were a large party and booked the whole house. The price per night per person came to 27.50€ so we were expecting cheap and chearful. Instead we got one of the best houses I have ever stayed in. The rooms are large and comfortable but what really impresses is the old Moroccan features, the courtyard, plaster work, tiles and cedar wood every where including huge doors and all the ceilings.
The staff were warm and friendly and live nearby and were always happy to help day or night. The food the maid cooked us was EXCELLENT and again great value for money even cheaper than the local nearby cafes (which were great fun).
The Medina itself was like something out of the old testiment and suprisingly my kids loved it!
All in all a great experience and we all would like to return.
Dar El Menia provided a stunning and tranquil reprieve from the wonderful madness Fes, and we loved the balance of meeting fellow travelers while also getting to know Hicham and his family a bit during our stay.
I guess the high light of the stay was the food Um Kalthum cooked for us and served us on the terrace but it’s difficult to say as the whole experience was just fantastic. Breakfasts in the winter sun served freshly made on the roof terrace was lovely and the quite contrast of Dar El Menia and the Fez explosion of the senses was very welcome.
We paid 60€ for a double room with shared bathroom, breakfast inclusive. The room was beautiful and cleaned and tidied every day. The shared bathroom room, large and equipped with all you would need. The Restoration is to a high standard with a real attention to detail. And the staff friendly and welcoming. All in all great value for money!
We would recommend this guest house to any one!
I first went to Dar El Menia with friends in December last year and we all had a fantastic time. Fes is an extraordinary and unique place, the Medina has a medieval atmosphere with its tiny streets, donkey jams and local color. My second stay at Dar El Menia was with my boyfriend and we had, yet again, a superb time. The staff, always genuinely helpful, have now established as a very efficient team with the right mix of hospitality while affording privacy and comfort.
Dar El Menia’s accommodations is as magical as I remembered it the first time but with some additional authentic touches. The roof terrace’ breakfasts and evenings spent chatting, with some local red wine, is still the hight light for me.
Excellent value for money!
Dar El Menia is such a beautiful place to stay, a real piece of moroccan art. From the moment we arrived we have had a wonderful, magical time. The hospitality of the staff namely Hicham,Mustafa and Um Kalthoom is outstanding and this beautiful house have made visiting Fes a unique experience, at the same time we instantly felt welcomed and at home. My children had great fun in the house and the madina. They want to go again.
Wow! What an amazing place to stay! Dar El Menia is simply stunning. We arranged with the house to be picked up at the airport and arrived at a car park by grand taxi to be met by Hicham, all went without a hitch. We arrived wandering through narrow, noisy, twisting streets, through an unassuming but beautifully carved door and into a quiet sunny courtyard, it was quite an experience. The house is awesome, alive with atmosphere and a sense of age, of time past. Whoever restored this house really put their all into it.
We hired the en-suite room for five nights which for the two of us was just perfect. We asked the maid to cook for us and she provided a feast enough for twice our number. It was delicious! The best food we ate in Morocco.
Breakfast was served on the roof-terrace and was just what you needed to keep you on your feet for a long day of exploring the maze that is Fes Medina.
When we began to pack for are onward journey we regretted that we had not stayed longer. We spent a month in Morocco and had a fantastic time. It still strikes me that a place so foreign, so far removed from our home, is only two and a half hours away by plane. Dar El Menia was the best place we stayed whilst in Morocco. We hope to return and would not hesitate to recommend it.
A friend and I stayed for a few days in April 2007, and will certainly come again. The house is exquisitely restored, the people who run it warm and friendly (giving advice on restaurants and a local hammam). The owner was there at the time, and he and his guests treated us as friends, inviting us to eat with them on the roof.
Views from the roof great, good bedding, good company, and good bathrooms
Tranquil yet central in this bustling medieval medina – furnished in an authentic morroccon way.
restored in a genuine and histrical way – intimate yet able to accomodate a family!
Great views from the roof terrace – kitchen on roof an added bon
Wow, what an incredible experience it has been to stay at Dar El Menia in Fes. It is right in the midst of the medina and its amazing decor gave us a great taste of the grandeur this imperial city once enjoyed. The house had everything we needed to relax in after days spent adventuring the mysteries of the medieval streets of Fes. It felt like being on a film set and returning at night to the luxury a film star would expect!!! The family who are employed to look after you do just that and more. We were made to feel very at home whilst at the same time allowed to enjoy the privacy that a whole house rental like this allows. Highly recommended! I will definitely be back in the Spring.
We arrived at Fes train station and we were pick up by two taxis and a smiling and welcoming Hicham, He organised our arrival having our luggage transported by caruso. The house is breathtaking we all walked in and did a 360 our jaws on the floor. It is such a beautiful house! The tile work and the plaster work are incredabily intercate. All the ceilings, window frames, and doors – including the two pairs of salon doors one set standing at over 12ft high – are all made of solid cedar. The cedar aroma fills the house and adds to the ambience of serenity and magisty.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming. They went out of their way to be helpful, the maid took one of our female traveling companions to a hamma and Hicham showed us around the Medina
Every morning we were cooked a fresh breakfast and in the evening we were treat to a feast of traditional moroccan fair of huge proportions.
Sat in the main salon with its four meter high ceiling, it is hard to believe that you are slap bang in the middle of the world’s largest and most populated medinas. The contrast between the insane hussle and bussle and the calm tranquility of the house is most welcome and after a day spent running up and down the medina’s labryth like streets it is needed!!
I have travel a lot in the Middle East and I will most certainly return to Dar El Menia and in fact I have already booked.

We stayed at Dar El Menia recently for a few days and had a great experience. I’m a furniture maker, so I really loved the craftsmanship throughout the house….from the hammered copper sink to the huge, carved cedar doors.
I think there are many beautiful medina homes to choose from in Fes, but for us, the best part about the house was the family that take care of it. Hicham, the son, speaks good English, is very helpful, and has a great sense of humor. Mustapha, the father, helps with the details of the home and is quite proud of the work he has put into the restoration. One of my buddies was sick one day, and Mustapha helped us track down some natural herbs/medicine as soon as he heard–he has a heart of gold and will go out of his way to help you if you need something. Um Klthum is a fabulous cook. One day, we hiked around the medina all day and we’re too tired to trek out again for a meal. We arranged with her ahead of time to have a home-cooked Moroccan meal that night and it was the best meal we had in Fes. Her harira (Moroccan soup) was outstanding. We ate on the rooftop balcony and enjoyed the sunset and stars at night….great experience. The breakfasts were great too.
I lived in Tunisia for 2 1/2 years and there were no riads there at the time. I got to know the people and culture, but it took a bit of time. This is a great way to experience the culture of Fes by staying in the heart of the city, being able to learn a bit of Arabic from the caretaker family (if you want to), and literally walking out your door into all the great sounds, sights, and smells of Fes!

We stayed at Dar El Menia for 9 days – and it was just perfect! The owner gave us a lot of information before arriving in Fes which was extremely helpful and transportation was arranged and was very prompt. Fortunately, we had the whole house to ourself and it was the perfect escape after exploring the chaotic medina. The riad is beautifully restored and the zellij and stucco works are of the highest standard. We ate every night on the terrace with Umm Khoultoum cooking traditional Morroccan cuisine of huge proportions – (delicious & better than any of the restaurants in the medina – and just what you need after a busy day) The location of the riad is just perfect, it is off one of the main roads (making it very easy not to get lost) and five minute walk from the car park so hailing a taxi is not difficult. By the end of our stay we felt like family – Communicating through a medley of english, french and arabic – Moustapha, Umm Khoulthoum and Hicham treated us so well, going out of their way to help us – we’ll definitely come back again and again and again!
Dar El Menia is a magical place and provided us with peace and relaxation far removed from the magnificent chaos of the Medina. We are a large family and rented the whole house which proved to be great value for money. Hicham organised or transport from the airport with out a hitch, helped us with our bags. He took us to Dar El Menia and made us all feel very welcome. The rooms are all double bedrooms some two sleep three. They are kept immaculate and change and tidied every day. Breakfast was served fresh every morning by the maid using freshly purchased produce bought from the Medina and was delicious! We asked the maid to cook us an evening meal on a number of occasions and were treat to a traditional Moroccan feast as though we were her long lost family. The service was excellent.
We all agreed that we would return in a wink of an eye and plan to do so. Thoroughly recommended!!
We stayed when the house had only just been finished, probably one of the first few guests but everything went well. A great base to explore the Medina (just off one of the signed walking routes so if you get a bit lost – the Medina is a warren and it’s easy to do – you can find your way back ok). The breakfast was good and the maid / guardian cooked us a meal one evening! Access to the house is on foot only (the car park is a couple of minutes walk away) but Mostapha helped us with the bags so wasn’t a problem. I’d recommend it if you want to see what the Medina’s got to offer. Plus a taxi ride (these can be fun!) gets you to the Ville Nouvelle in about 10 minutes and gives a whole lot more to see.
No te arrepentirás.
We stayed in this beautifully restored Riad in the heart of the Fes Medina for three nights, and were very pleased with it. It's a bit hidden, in a quiet alley of the main street in the Medina, and very peaceful. The Riad has a lot of character, with many old details and nicely decorated rooms. Also, there is a large roof terrace, with a good view of the hills surrounding the city. Staff are helpful, and because the Riad only has four rooms the overall atmosphere is very relaxed, almost like staying in a rented appartment. We would definitely recommend Dar el Menia to friends planning to stay in Fes.

Authentic and well restored riad. Great location, great service, great food, and friendly. Nice views from the terrace. Would stay here again - any day.

We've just got back home from a great trip of Morocco. It really is a fantastic country of extremes. My boyfriend and I stayed at Dar El Menia for three nights and had wonderful time. The house is very special and Fez is like nowhere I've ever been before straight out of the middle ages.
The dar is right in the center of the Medina and is very comfortable and the staff helpful and kind. The architectural detail of the house is outstanding echoing fez's imperial past.
We had a great stay and would love to go back!

My wife and I spent 2 nights in Dar El Meina during our trip to Morocco. It is a beautifully restored and maintained guest house in the medina in Fes. It is really like staying in a house, as there are only 3-4 rooms and you get a key to the front door. The Dar is not "hosted per se, but the family that the owner has hired to run it took very good care of us. They really make you feel welcome and overall the experience we had staying there was vastly superior to staying at a hotel.

Graham,
Just to let you know that we had a fabulous trip to Fes. Mustafa and his wife are absolutely delightful, as was the Riad.

A rental that actually feels like a good hotel. One of the prettiest Dars and Riads we have seen in Fez, with full service, located on the Medina's main axis and close to most things you may want to see or do in Fez.

Would definitely recommend it as a lovely place to stay in the medina without breaking the bank.

Tranquillity in the heart of the Madina. Fantastic spot, no hassle at all. Mustapha and his Mrs saw to all our wants . If you want to visit Fes, and truly know it. Its a must to stay in a Dar. And you would be struggling to find better for the price..........Also pop around the corner, just uphill a few steps and enjoy a special arabic coffee or mint tea at the little cafe tucked away in the corner. enjoy.............
